Inaugural of U.S.-Nigeria Working Group
Today in Abuja, Lt. Gen. John Brennan joined senior Nigerian leaders to launch the inaugural U.S.-Nigeria Working Group, a strategic platform designed to enhance coordination, accountability, and joint efforts in the fight against terrorism and the protection of vulnerable communities across Nigeria.
This initiative signals an important step in strengthening international cooperation to tackle the growing security crisis that continues to devastate lives, particularly in the North and Middle Belt regions.
The timing of this launch cannot be overlooked. Christian communities in Nigeria continue to bear the brunt of violence, with hundreds killed in targeted attacks over the past years a reality some leaders, including former U.S. President Donald Trump, have referred to as Christian genocide.
Churches have been attacked, clerics and worshippers slaughtered, and families displaced, while security responses have often been slow, insufficient, or entirely absent.
It is past time to say enough is enough. The perpetrators armed Muslim terrorist groups and bandits operating in the North and surrounding regions must be confronted decisively. No amount of negotiation, politics, or rhetoric can replace justice and protection for innocent civilians.
The U.S. Nigeria Working Group presents an opportunity to hold perpetrators accountable, strengthen intelligence and rapid response, and send a clear signal: targeting religious communities with violence will no longer be tolerated.
Nigeria cannot continue to lose lives while the world watches. Coordinated action, firm leadership, and uncompromising enforcement of the law are essential to stop the bloodshed and restore hope to the victims.
