Reports that bandits attacked a community in Zamfara State and burned four villagers to death simply because they refused to pay illegal levies should shock the conscience of every Nigerian. This is not crime alone; it is terrorism, extortion, and murder rolled into one.
These villagers were not armed. They were not criminals. They were ordinary people trying to survive. Burning human beings alive over money is an act of inhuman cruelty that has no justification cultural, political, or religious.
What is happening in Zamfara and similar states is the result of impunity. When criminals collect “taxes,” enforce rules, and kill without consequence, the state has lost control. Illegal levies are not governance; they are ransom by terror.
This tragedy also raises hard questions about security failure. How can armed groups move freely, impose levies, and commit such atrocities without swift consequences? Communities are abandoned, and criminals are emboldened.
Nigeria must act decisively:
• Hunt down perpetrators and their sponsors
• Protect rural communities
• End illegal levies permanently
• Prosecute collaborators without fear or favor
No Nigerian should die for refusing to pay criminals. No community should be left to face terror alone. Enough is enough. The killing must stop.
