This is the reason why my mother always told me to speak my native language to my children

I am based in the Canada with my family. I have four children, the oldest is twelve while the youngest is four years. My husband is not from Nigeria so I didn’t bother him about building a house in Nigeria. My mother always told me to speak my native language to my children and I have been doing so. They understand everything but they don’t speak much. When I went home, i told my mom I would like to build a house in our village.

I bought a land and contacted a builder. But my mom said I should allow my sister to be in charge and work with her own builder. I agreed and returned back to Canada ????????. I started sending money for foundation, building, roofing and finishing. My sister was sending pictures of every stage. I told my mom and sister that would come back after the house was completed, so I could come with my children. After five years she told me the house was finished.  I bought all the furniture and shipped down. Everything seemed good .

I started planning my visit with my children but I didn’t inform anybody except my childhood friend. When I got to the airport my friend picked us up and I stayed with her for two days . I called my mom and sister that I just landed in the country. I planned to get to them in two days and that I would like to stay in my house so she should get the place ready. She was excited but I could sense the uneasiness in her voice. I got to my sister’s house with my children. She had cooked my favorite meal  and I could even smell the aroma from outside. The table was set. She said after food she would go and drop us in my house.

I thanked her and went to the bathroom. When I returned , my children were already on their toes standing while my sister was outside talking with someone. My children said we should leave and that the food was poisoned . They said they heard their aunt speaking to someone in their dialect that she didn’t build any house

. She said a lot of things in their presence not knowing they understood our language .

My sister was surprised when I challenged her and asked her to taste the food. She couldn’t and that confirmed my suspicions. We moved out immediately to the hotel

,changed our flight tickets and returned back to Canada ???????? . If my children didn’t understand my language, we would have been on the pages of the papers. Let your children understand your language . I thank God for our lives !
